Learning Log 12

Date: 27/09/2016

Today,  it's good  to learn everything. Teacher and students are happy. I learn three types of cursors  will appear when we choose them on items.  I learn about how to create direction of cursor in Adobe captivate 8 . We can do that by click on rollover caption and rollover image. We click on blank slide , media , image , rollover caption, choose rest of slide and we get the slide that has caption appear .Next, I learn how to make caption by click on picture of sound for teaching vocabulary. In  addition , there is cursor will appear picture when choose on caption . I learn about how to create interactions in this program by clicking learning interaction. After that, it appear several interactions here to choose. We get caption cursors when we click on picture, sound , and caption. Finally , we publish to computer, choose project title , browse in folder  ,and choose flash program to publish. Our CALL program will perfect.

Learning Log 11

            Today,  I learn  how to create  EXIT bottom and tests in Adobe Captivate 8. For me, exit but but bottom is rather than difficult to create.Then,  I will get two bottoms ; `YES` and `NO`. We option them,if learner choose YES ,program will sign out.If learners choose NO , program will back to MENU slide.We can make several type of test such as multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and matching, true/false. First, fill in the blank test , is used in exercise more than test. Learners can answer the questions by type or choose the best answer. Exercises in CALL have to have feedback immediately. Next, matching test ,we can insert images into the slide and student can answer for 3-5 times . Moreover, it doesn’t have condition to make tests , it’s depend on maker of CALL.

Today ,  I learn how to use and create CALL . Several types of CALL programs were developed and used during this the phase of communicative CALL. First, there were a variety of programs to provide skill practice, but in a non-drill format. Examples of these types of programs include courseware for paced reading, text reconstruction, and language games. The history of CALL suggests that the computer can serve a variety of uses for language teaching. It can be a tutor which offers language drills or skill practice; a stimulus for discussion and interaction; or a tool for writing and research. With the advent of the Internet, it can also be a medium of global communication and a source of limitless authentic materials. So, it play a vital role in teaching language. For  examples, textbooks, program course, CDs, video.Moreover, I learn to create CALL in Adobe Captivate 8. I make the first page is log in the name, template , menu bottoms, exercise , and pre-test. I enjoy to make this program.Finally, teacher assign us to prepare sound and audio to use in next period.

Today  I learn and  discuss about Computer Assisted Language Learning  and English Language Teaching, an  Overview in Thailand. I know the definition and the history  of CALL development. CALL has three phrases. I also learn term of CALL are CALI,  CELL that  is self access. Applying CALL in Thailand is useful for teachers and learners. Teacher teaches me about authentic materials such as newspaper, song, sign , and bochour.CALL can improve teacher’s competence. In conclusion, teacher teaches me about introduction how to use Adobe Captivate program to create CALL in the next period and we have to prepare data to make it.

Learning Log 8

                   This week, I open the files of CAI(Computer Assisted Instruction) and CALL(Computer-assisted  Language Learning) in Facebook to discuss it.How differences between them.CAI and CALL ,have something in common that teachers can make for product for students;
- They are multimedia.
- I can add pictures.graph media, videos, sounds in these programs.
                  Their purposes 
- To attraction, draw the students to attention
- When the students do computers, they can feedback.
- When teacher compare their scores , teacher can consider their learning ,too.

- This learning will match students to do process of different abilities.

I also learn about seven types of CAI

1. Tutorial instruction 
         is the program that gave the content to students in text, picture, audio, and all of them. 
2. Drills and practice
         is the program that had only questions or problems to the students to solve them.
3. Simulation 
          is the program that simulate situation from the truth to practice skills to the students.
4. Instructional games 
          is the program that encourage students to learn the lesson.
5. Discovery 
           is the program that wanted students learned from their experience.
6. Problem-solving
           is the program that wanted students to think and decide to do something.

7. Tests
           is  the method that test the student's abilities.

I know the advantages or good points  of CAI.
 - To make the students interested in the lesson
 - Immediately feedback
 - freedom to experiment with different options
 - Students can learn wherever.
 - Helps teacher can devote more time to individual students

Finally, there are some bad points of CAI;
- Teachers have to plan the lesson
- Take for long time to make the program
- Some point of this program doesn't creative for the students.

Learning Log 7

             Today, I discuss for pair work,Thai-English Parallel that teacher assigns for us.Than, I watch video about technologies.For example.the student study with computer, blogger, google search, and video conference.I learn technology in globalization period, technologies are good things and bad things.Then, I have to know how to manage and use them.Then, teacher teaches about the important and history of CAI and CALL.I learn the advantages of CALL , it help the students to use and they apply the story. Teacher suggest me to survey the student who has problems in language learning.After that, I collect the content from search and I begin to design it.Teacher teaches me how to make the storyboard, adding the text, adding multimedia, giving the objects,and other parts of CAI.
- collecting the datas to make CAI
- title, texts
- background
- adding voice or audio
- creating pretest, exercises,and post-test

   Especially, the numbers of frames or content should appropriate in my title.

          Today, teacher teaches me how to check the number of words from Corpus Analysis,  Antconc in my topic,sport. 
          I  know frequency of words, function word,etc. I see "x" in function word, means file changing from other file.I learn content word and function word from my data that I search from the internet.Content word in this Corpus analysis give meanings of word and it is different with function word that have function in that sentence. Function words , for example, a, an, the, in, on, into, in front of, to,etc.I also learn how to find concordance by the key word, terminalogies, and collocation.I also change the word to see how the word appears in sentence.It is easy if I search for noun , verb,or another part of speech of words.If I put * ,the word will appear for many types of word.For instance, race, races,raced, racer.In addition, I learn local grammar in corpus by I copy the sentence to check the grammartical. I want to know how many frequency of the word in my corpus and then I click on frequency so the number of the word "sport " that I find is about 613 concordance Hits.The word "sports" is about 213 concordance Hits.After that , I learn about the style in my corpus that using in V.ing, gerunds, to infinitive ,  personification, similie, Finally, I learn types of Corpara as translation resources and English-Thai Parallel Concordance.

         Today, I  learn Corpus Linguistics; concordance. Corpus is a large collection of texts. It is a body of written or spoken material upon which a linguistic analysis is based. The plural form of corpus is corpora. It’s very important  to use in Language teaching. Concordance is a list of the occurrences of a word or phrase in a corpus, given in the context of the sentence it occurs in. I search words or phrases in BNC or corpus leeds. Corpus leeds is more comfortable than BNC  because I can use this corpora from the internet without user login and easy to understand. Concordance lines are the lines of sentences that show when I search a single word. For instance, I search the word ‘ good’ , there are many concordance lines will show the word ‘ good’ in sentences. I can see the differences of this word in each sentence. At the same time , I see the pattern of each sentence , what the left word or right word of the word that I search for. Especially , If I know what word or phrase that I can use with corpus, I will appreciate use them to make sentences or teaching English. One of data analyze program which I learn in this class is Antconc . It is a large data analyze program that consist of various types of data and finished complex is a part of the package without needing to buy software. I can create  corpus with myself , finding data that I interested in from the internet.Then, I copy all data from many websites and  I save them as notepad.If I want to check the number of words,I open the antconc program by open file directly and it will show number of all words.It’s depends to find a single word, a phrase, one word or another, wildcards in words, and wildcards as words. I also learn Thai National Corpus (TNC )using that the standard of language data is collect into the computer.I can get the information  that will be use as the representative of Thai in current.For example, I search the word ‘นิรนัย’ ,it will show 36 TOT and use it as noun more than verb. I can use this word in sentences in Thai because there are differences meanings of this word. So, I have to learn and understand  another words in English-Thai and Thai – English translation together.

       This week, I attend for Introduction Corpus Linguistics (Concordances) traning with Mr.Kriangkrai Vathanalaoha.I am very exited.I login the BNC and study about it. I learn about definition of corpus. Corpus is a large collection of texts. The plural form of corpus is corpora. I also learn the history of Corpus that began in 1897s and 1950s-1960s. The case for introspection, Chomsky said we should focus on language competence rather than language performance.In addition, I learn about seven types of Corpora.
1. Special Corpus 
     - the language of newspapers ex. Bangkok post
     - time:1990 to the present day

2. General Corpus (BNC)
     
3. Multilingual Corpus
     - English and Spanish
4. Parallel Corpus
      - English or Thai Corpus
5. Learner Corpus
     - language used create by people learning a particular lanuage
6. Historical or Diachronic Corpus
    
7. Monitor Corpus
     
    Later, I learn process in Corpus Linguistics,for instance,Frequencies,Concordances, collocations, distribution information, Dispersion plots, etc.
   - Frequencies refer to how many words in focus are there in the corpus.
   - Concordances refer to hoe does the word appear in context.
   - collocations refer to what kind of words usually appear with '' word".
   - Dispersion plots refer to where is the word "word" appear in the text.
         Finally, I learn how to use this program correctly.Especially, I think Corpus Linguistics is good for me and everyone who interested in.I hope it to useful for me in Language learning.

           This day,I attened the seminar about Linguistics and language Teaching .The lecturer is Professor Dr.Budsaba Kanoksilapatham. She comes from English Department, Faculty of Art,Silpakorn University. First she told about skills that a teacher need to have.There are Teaching methods/pedagogy and Linguistic competence.The most important for a teacher is Linguistic competence.Then, I learnt Phonetics and Phonology such as how to produce the letter h and consonant sounds for example think thank them and the. After that she taught how to read vowel sounds such as full-fool and back-bag.After that I did the pre-test about intonation and I got 27/40 score.She taught how to stress the vocabulary from the test such as amaze , recognize, anatomy, behavior and complementary.Then,I learnt collocation (e.g.economic crisis). I learnt about Syntax : subjunctive and indicative mood.Then, she discussed Pragmatics some sentence was request that want the idea such as "The box is heavy!!" so you must answer "Can I help you?".The important title that we have to use in social is Sociolinguistics some sentence are formal some sentence are informal so we have to use in socio factors. Lexical Semantics or vocabulary some vocabulary are stronger than one such as -to boil  is stronger than to simmer or cold is colder than cool.Some word is slang such as kid-child.Some word is positive and some word is negative for example thin and skinny .Discourse has main structure when written. If you want to be teacher ,you will have your corpus linguistics. After that she taught linguistic research skill, they found the error about subject verb agreement in sentence.Before the end she taught about life-long learning.

      Today, I learn about  blogger’s template selecting and finding them on the internet. I study how to select the clock, calendar, counter, and  QR code by searching from Google. I search them for free and then I copy their codes. I can add gadjed in blogger by choose java script , give the name, and paste the code.If not sure, I can review item in  my blogger. I also learn friend’s linking,I can link their blogger’s address from their page in Facebook.Then, I copy their URLs and paste them in my blog linking. In  addition, I learn article creating in my blogger,I post everything what I learn in class or outside class in blog. If I want to create a new article, I have to click on new post and I also edit my articles. The last one that I learn in class is adding English videos in blog. I can search them in youtube, and before spread in my blog,I have to click ‘share’, ‘embed’, and select the video’s size to show in my blogger.

         This day, It was the first period of Computer Application in Enlish Technology subject.Teacher  explained the course syllabus and she asked me for the importances of technology in Language teaching.Teacher gave abbreviations that I used in this subject such as ESOL,TESOL,ELL,PDF,ESL,EFL,and ELT.Technology in English Teaching such as tape recoders,Language laboratories,video,CALL (CD ROMs),and TELL(internet and web-based tools).I learned the role of technology  for language teaching.For instance,
organizer,instructional designer,material resource manager,instructional guide,and facilitator. There are vocabularies such as techie which meant a person who is expert in or enthusiastic about technology, especially computing.Technophobe which meant a person who fears, dislikes, or avoids new technology. Tech-savvy which meant proficient in the use of technology, especially computers.Then, I learned how to make weblog but I had to registered gmail first. The teacher  taught  about  blog’s meaning and I searched   free template for using in blog. I also learned acronyms.

The Acronyms of technology for Language teaching

IT = Information Technology 
       It refers to the application of computer to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other enterprise.

ICT = Information and  Communication Technology
           It refers to an extended term for information Technology (IT) which stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications ), computers as well as necessary enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-visual systems, which enable users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information.

CAI = Computer Assisted Instruction 
            It refers to an interactive instructional technique whereby a computer is used to present the instructional material and monitor the learning that takes place. CAI uses a combination of text, graphics, sound and video in enhancing the learning process. The computer has many purposes in the classroom, and it can be utilized to help a student in all areas of the curriculum.

CALL = Computer Assisted Language Learning 
         It refers to the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning.

CMC = Computer Mediated Communication 
              It refers to defined as any human communication that occurs through the use of two or more electronic devices. While the term hastraditionally referred to those communications that occur via computer-mediated formats , it has also been applied to other forms of text-based interaction such as text messaging.

TELL = Technology Enhanced Language Learning  
               It refers to the use of the computer as a technological innovation to display multimedia as a means of complementing a teaching method langauge teachers.

WBI = Web - based Instruction
              It refers to teaching and learning supported by the attributes and resources of the Internet.

MUD = Multi - User Dungeon
              It refers to a multiplayer real-time virtual world, usually text-based. MUDs combine elements of role-playing games,hack and slash, player versus player, interactive fiction, and online chat.
